What are the rules on double-touch penalties?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Crystal Palace&#8217;s Jean-Philippe Mateta had his goal from the penalty spot disallowed by the video assistant referee (VAR) for an accidental &#8216;double-touch&#8217; during the first half of their Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But unlike in previous seasons, Mateta was given the chance to retake the penalty &#8211; which he scored past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to put the hosts 1-0 ahead at Selhurst Park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">That is because a rule change for the 2025-26 Premier League season allows accidental &#8216;double-touch&#8217; penalties to be retaken &#8211; but only if the kick was successful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Where such kicks are unsuccessful, an indirect free-kick will be given to the defending team if they occur in a match, or be recorded as a miss if it happens during a penalty shootout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;After review, Crystal Palace 14 [Mateta] touches the ball accidentally twice as the ball goes into the net,&#8221; referee Robert Jones announced to the stadium. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The final decision is a retaken penalty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mateta&#8217;s 36th-minute opener was the first time in Premier League history that a player was allowed to retake a penalty under the new regulation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The International Football Association Board (Ifab), which sets the sport&#8217;s laws, updated the ruling on 1 July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The clarification was made following the controversy caused by Julian Alvarez&#8217;s penalty being disallowed for accidentally kicking the ball twice in a Champions League game for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">European football&#8217;s governing body Uefa had asked for the laws concerning these rare instances to be reviewed after Atletico enquired about the validity of the decision to disallow Alvarez&#8217;s penalty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Following the change, England&#8217;s Beth Mead also had to re-take her penalty after kicking the ball twice in the Euro 2025 final penalty shootout.
