Celtic Challenge: Clovers beat Lightning to book spot in the final

Clovers secured their spot in the Celtic Challenge final with a 35-20 win over Gwalia Lightning at Dexcom Stadium.

Following an exciting first half, Clovers lead 21-10 at the break after responding well to falling a try behind.

Lightning fought back in the second half but couldn’t complete a dramatic comeback.

Denis Fogarty’s side will face the winners of Saturday’s second semi-final between Wolfhounds and Brython Thunder (15:00 GMT) in the final.

It was the perfect start for Lightning, who took the lead after four minutes through Alaw Pyrs’ converted try.

However, after the opening try, Clovers upped the tempo and responded with Beth Buttimer able to cross the line and Enya Breen adding the extra two.

Flanker Ailish Quinn was then sent to the sin bin with Carys Hughes’ penalty putting the away side ahead once again.

They couldn’t take full advantage of the extra-player, though, with converted tries from Beibhinn Parsons and Alana McInerney putting Clovers ahead after 40 minutes.

After a television match official [TMO] check early in the second half, Ruth Campbell’s try extended Clovers’ advantage before Lightning responded through Caitlin Lewis, whose try was also confirmed by TMO.

Lightning pushed to the end with a try following a maul from a line-out closing the gap.

However, Alana McInerney touched down Clovers’ fifth and final try in the closing seconds to guarantee it was Fogarty’s side who advanced to the final on Saturday, 28 March at Hive Stadium.
