Shoaib Bashir was pleased with his opening day effort but admitted there remains a massive job for him still to do to help Derbyshire over the line at Old Trafford
Bashir’s summer move to Derbys could prove to be the spark which ignites a career that had appeared to flat-line both at Somerset and with England over the winter.
The 22-year-old’s 4-76 on day one against Lancashire helped ensure the visitors kept their hosts in check as they posted 351 in their first innings.
“I’m quite young as a spinner and I think we mature quite late. It’s very important to get some exposure to the County Championship and to bowl as many overs as I have,” he said.
“I’ve a job to do in the Championship and I’m just trying to contribute to Derbyshire as much as I can.”
Bashir remains in contact with England spin coach Jeetan Patel saying he remains his “go-to man”.
“I have regular conversations with him,” he said. “Having some game time is quite nice and getting to bowl some overs at this time of year.”
Marcus Harris made 125 on his return to Lancs from a winter/summer of Sheffield Shield cricket with Victoria down under and he believes his side are in a decent position ahead of day two.
“I think with our bowling attack, we’ve already got a wicket. So I think we could challenge them potentially and have a good day,” he said.
