Bayern Munich: Why did players wear cockatoo T-shirts in Bundesliga title celebrations?

Bayern Munich’s players celebrated their latest Bundesliga title win on Sunday with T-shirts displaying cockatoos wearing club shirts.

Their 4-2 win over Stuttgart on Sunday sealed a 35th German top-flight title and a second in as many seasons for head coach Vincent Kompany.

While Bayern secured their own title this season, last season’s maiden crown under Kompany came due to results elsewhere.

When Bayer Leverkusen’s draw with Freiburg last season was enough to hand Bayern the title, Kompany and his players were following the result on a television in a Munich restaurant.

In that restaurant, the players took a shine to a cockatoo statue which was later taken by one of Bayern’s players. A week later, the statue was front and centre of Bayern’s title celebrations.

“I’m not saying who it was,” Kompany said during last season’s title win. “The story will come out some time.”

The infamous cockatoo statue also featured on the pitch during Sunday’s title celebrations, being pictured with players including Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka.
