Joey Barton handed suspended sentence over offensive X posts

Reacting to news of Barton’s sentencing, Vine said: “I’m happy the case is over.

“Joey Barton has been made to pay a lot for his disgusting lies and abuse, but I fear he’ll keep offending until the day he dies.”

In his victim impact statement, which was earlier read in court, the broadcaster said Barton’s actions had been “profoundly traumatising”.

“I felt my reputation was sullied,” he said.

“Joey Barton is a small man who feeds off the pain of others.”

In her statement, Ward described Barton’s posts as “irresponsible” and “hateful”.

“I am now constantly afraid,” she said. “Not just of the defendant, but the people he has incited against me and his history only heightens my fear.”

She added the “barrage of hate” has left her “questioning my own worth”.

Aluko rejected Barton’s defence that it was a “joke that got out of hand” after the judge ruled his attacks on her were “racially charged and sexist”.

In her impact statement, Aluko said Barton’s comments were “abhorrent and the most offensive criticism she has experienced in her life” and she had to step up security as a result.

“I remain deeply upset with the malicious comparison to serial killers and feel humiliated given that millions of people will have seen this comparison,” she said, adding that as a result she was too scared to leave her house, leading to cancelled engagements and loss of income.

“Joey Barton thrives on hurting people,” she told BBC’s Newsnight, “he absolutely intended to get the highest amount of engagement that he needed to get to promote a podcast and to go viral with his content”.

Aluko hopes others will be deterred by the seriousness of Barton’s sentencing.

“If you decide to target people online and you are aggressive in that approach and you bully people online and you attack people’s race, you will be held criminally accountable,” she said.
