With the Ashes won, the Australia skipper is rested as he manages his return from a back injury, while Nathan Lyon is also out of the series with a hamstring injury.
Michael Neser, who starred at Brisbane, comes back in alongside Jhye Richardson, while Brendan Doggett misses out.
Meanwhile Smith’s return from illness at Adelaide means Josh Inglis drops out of the side, with Usman Khawaja retaining a place in the middle order and Cameron Green dropping to number seven.
