You can’t say Manchester City haven’t been given ample opportunity to be sat at the summit in place of leaders Arsenal right now.
Pep Guardiola’s side sit six points behind the Gunners but how different things could have looked with a brighter start to the year.
City failed to win any of their opening four games of 2026 in the Premier League, dropping nine points in the process.
In fact, they have only won one game in the top flight since the turn of the year, yet, incredibly, remain in touching distance of the leaders.
Had they just turned a couple of their draws into wins, it would be Guardiola’s men that found themselves in the drivers seat right now.
Will the not-so-happy new year prove to be decisive come May?
